Our Goals, Objectives and Key Strategies

Satisfied and Committed Employees

Objective

To create a collegial environment that fosters productivity through teamwork, nurturing personal growth and supporting professional development, and recognizing valued individual and group contributions, resulting in satisfied employees who are truly committed to the Department’s mission and values.

Key Strategies

  • apply our agreed upon values in everything we do - respect, integrity, fairness and trust, positive attitude and commitment - this is what we mean by collegiality;
  • treat everyone as important contributors - there are no second class citizens;
  • achieve equitable workload assignments;
  • foster a team mentality in all our work;
  • provide professional development and training opportunities;
  • improve performance evaluation and reward processes; and
  • increase the level of communication within the Department.

Excellence in Teaching

Objective

To be a nationally recognized teaching department whose graduates are superbly prepared to become professional accountants.

Key Strategies

  • faculty: attract faculty who are committed to teaching excellence;
  • knowledge: offer courses that provide relevant, contemporary, and leading-edge knowledge which combine to form an integrative understanding of accounting and the role accounting plays in organizations and society;
  • pedagogy: adopt pedagogical approaches that develop within students a set of skills and abilities necessary for the practice of accounting and an orientation towards self-learning;
  • the experience: foster an environment where students and faculty work together in accomplishing the learning objective, promoting mutual respect and a sense of pride and ownership in the Department’s accomplishments;
  • partnering: establish links with the business community to enhance the relevancy of the curriculum and the application of knowledge; and
  • student placement: assist students in securing employment.

Excellence in Research

Objective

To have faculty with a national reputation in their areas of inquiry,and whose research is valued by the academic, business and professional accounting communities. Key Strategies

  • recruit highly competent and motivated research faculty;
  • provide the necessary resources to undertake research;
  • conduct and disseminate research of interest to the business and professional accounting communities;
  • hold regular academic seminars; and
  • maintain the vibrancy of the Master of Science program and leverage off of it.

Exemplary Service

Objective

To be an active contributor in the international and national academic, professional and business communities, of which the Department is an integral part. Key Strategies

  • be represented on professional accounting organizational boards and committees;
  • be represented on academic accounting boards and committees;
  • provide service to facilitate the activities of both the College and the University; and
  • provide professional volunteer service to the community.

Financial Stability

Objective

To ensure that the necessary resources exist to effectively accomplish our mission. Key Strategies

  • be ethical, efficient and effective in the use of resources entrusted to us;
  • acquire resources through professional programming and training initiatives;
  • be active in fund raising efforts; and
  • pursue grants from educational establishments.
