ESB to host Western Canada's Largest Business Competition

Release Date : August 23, 2009

Eight months of intense planning, research, and one strong strategy team, led by Matthew Bennett and Stephanie Ulm, paid off when they won the privilege to host Western Canada's largest and most prestigious undergraduate business competition in Saskatoon on behalf of the Edwards School of Business.  600 competitors from JDC West will take over Saskatoon in January 2011, giving Western Canada a taste of Saskatchewan's unique style of business.  The Edwards School of Business beat out the Sauder School of Business' bid this weekend in Prince George, B.C. to host the games.

"We look forward with anticipation to be host city for the JDC West Business Case Competition.  January 2011 will shine warm and bright with the inviting hospitality of our enthusiastic, intelligent and motivated students and hosts from the Edwards School of Business as they welcome peers and competitors from across the west.  This is one strong and dynamic team, and we can truly be proud!" Silvia Martini, VP of Marketing at Tourism Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan's bid challenged voters from across the four provinces to "Go Against the Grain" and to come "Experience Saskatchewan". Saskatoon and Saskatchewan are currently business hot spots and the goal is to unite the leading business students in a leading city with a leading economy. This is great news for the Edwards School of Business, and is a perfect opportunity for the U of S college to showcase their distinctive education experience and display why students graduate with plans to stay in Saskatchewan.  The competition offers a great opportunity for businesses to network with these students during the days' case competitions and the evenings' social events.

JDC, originally Jeux du Commerce, or "Commerce Games" originated in Quebec where the games have been a tradition for over 20 years.  JDC West was formed in 2006 and has been hosted twice in Alberta, and twice in British Columbia.  Saskatoon in 2011 will be the furthest east the competition has ever traveled.  JDC West is a business competition that unites six hundred of Western Canada's best business students to compete in the various realms of commerce, from academics to spirit. Prince George, BC. will play host in 2010.

The games will showcase the Edwards School of Business, the University of Saskatchewan and the City of Saskatoon, as well as numerous event venues across the city.  This will be a prime opportunity to exhibit Saskatchewan's strong economy and unique business environment.  In exchange Saskatoon will get a first hand chance to interact with tomorrow's business leaders and entrepreneurs. Local and provincial businesses are being encouraged to participate and make a positive impact on these emerging, young professionals.
