(From the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, March 24, 2009)
A University of Saskatchewan computer science student has won $3000 through the Raymond James Stock Market Challenge.
From October to March, Tyler Filteau amassed portfolio gains of 75 per cent, turning his simulated $100,000 into $174,821. During the same period, the Toronto Stock Exchange lost 24 per cent of its value.
The challenge provides U of S students the opportunity to enter the market without risking their own capital. The prize money, however, is real.
Filteau attributes his success to cutting his losses short, letting the winners run and a little luck, according to challenge coordinator Andrew Chau [a fourth year finance major in the Edwards School of Business]. This was the second year the challenge was held at the university.
