Sometimes you just need some extra help to get through that class or prepare for an exam or assignment. Assistance is available for individuals or small groups.
Talk to the instructor of the course. Most of them can be pretty helpful if you outline your struggles. They can also make suggestions for potential tutors as often they are familiar with former students or tutors who may be of assistance.
A general list of tutors by course can be found in the Rawlco Room, ESB 91, and from the ESB Undergraduate Programs and Services Office. This is a good place to start for ESB courses. Try the Aboriginal Student Centre for tutors in your electives. They can usually recommend some as well. The USSU also has tutor lists available.
Talk to the Director, Aboriginal Initiatives or one of the Rawlco Aboriginal Business Student Services Assistants. We know current and former students who have course specific tutor experience. ESB graduate students are also another source and we can help you contact them, too.
It’s really important to find a tutor that’s right for the course and your schedule. You have to invest some time to sort this out with potential tutors.
Once you think you’ve found a tutor, financial assistance may be available for some or all of the costs. Get your arrangements pre-approved by the Director, Aboriginal Initiatives. We may need to verify that you are a registered student in ESB and proof of Aboriginal ancestry may be required. We also may need to check if you have other sources of financial assistance for tutors and your academic standing.
Tutors on approved lists or referred by course instructors are generally acceptable, otherwise, some verification of tutor credentials may be required. Tutor hourly rates can vary so we also need to consider this. A form is available for you or your proposed tutor to complete so that we can also ensure processing of any payments and keep our tutor list updated. Tutors have to submit their hours regularly for payment and will need to fill out payroll information forms, too. Payment will not be made for missed appointments with your tutor.
Let us now how it’s going with your tutor. If it’s not working, end it. If it is working, tell us why - it helps us recommend tutors in the future.
Get on an approved list. Contact the Undergraduate Programs and Services Office, the Aboriginal Students Centre or the USSU. Let us know you’re interested and we’ll add you to our list. We may need to check your credentials and verify your own academic performance so we can be confident in our recommendations. There’s a form for this too.
