Program Description

Whether you have a business idea or want to drive change in your workplace, the Certificate in Entrepreneurship encourages you to think outside the box. Graduates of this degree-level certificate will be innovative thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and emerge as leaders within a team.

What You'll Learn

Offered through a flexible learning experience, the eight-course program provides an introduction to entrepreneurship and venture development. 

The program is designed to enable you to expand your knowledge of accounting, human resources, marketing, and concepts commonly encountered in business while developing an entrepreneurial mindset. Graduates will be prepared with the knowledge and skills to participate in or start a new venture.

    Introduction to Business

    Students will examine case studies providing an integrated analysis across the six business disciplines over the four stages of an organizational life cycle with a focus on integrated organizational decision-making. 

    COMM 105 Introduction to Organizational Behaviour Introduces various concepts and tools that will assist in understanding behaviour and enhancing effectiveness in organizations at an individual, group, and organization-wide levels.
    COMM 201 

    Introduction to Financial Accounting

    Examines what financial statements are, what they include and the means of and deriving information for and from them. 

    COMM 204  Introduction to Marketing

    Provides students with a broad understanding of marketing tools and strategies. Explores how products and services are strategically marketed. 

    COMM 349 

    Introduction to Entrepreneurship (Capstone)

    Designed to provide both knowledge and evaluation skills needed to add value in the new venture sector of the economy. Students taking this course will acquire knowledge in respect to current concepts in entrepreneurship, primarily as it concerns the evaluation of entrepreneurs, their ventures, and the venturing environment. 
    COMM 447  Entrepreneurship & Venture Development (Capstone) Helps students develop the skills required for the successful formation of new business ventures, effective business succession, or small business expansion.

    COMM 203 Introduction to Finance Deals with the functions of the financial manager, including the problems and techniques of financial decision-making. 
    COMM 205 Introduction to Operations Management Introduces students to concepts and decision-making techniques used in the design, planning, execution, control, and improvement of operations of world-class manufacturing and service companies.
    COMM 210 Introduction to Management Accounting Introduces students to the vital role that modern management accounting information plays in running a successful business in today's business world. 
    COMM 211 Human Resource Management Develops a framework for human resource management comprising the context, issues, strategies, and processes of managing people in organizations. The challenges arising from the context include legal and ethical issues as well as global perspectives.
    COMM 304 Introduction to Business Law An introduction to the general principles of law relating to contract and tort. 
    COMM 340 Introduction to International Business An introduction to the global setting in which international business decisions are made. Emphasis is placed on the factors which are relevant to decision making in a wide range of international business functions and international business forms. 
    COMM 345 Business and Public Policy Considers various areas of government activities which affect business decision making and considers their impact on management decision making. 
    COMM 347 Aboriginal Business in Canada Examines the best practices related to the legal structures, governance models, and management systems of aboriginal businesses by studying successful aboriginal businesses and communities.
    COMM 352 Marketing Strategy Concentrates on the development of marketing strategies. An operational framework is built for analyzing the marketing environment and selecting among strategic altneratives, primarily through case analysis. 
    COMM 354 Consumer Behaviour  Considers factors influencing consumer behavior as a focal point of marketing decision marketing. Material is analyzed for its usefulness in designing, evaluating, and implementing marketing strategies. 
    COMM 395 Business Forecasting  Studies the process of business forecasting which involves analyzing historial data to discover the underlying tendencies and patterns. This knowledge is used to project the data into future time periods. 

Admission Requirements


The Certificate in Business program offers admission at two points in the calendar year.

  • Direct Entry Admission - High School
    • Grade 12 standing or equivalent
    • Less than 18 credit units of transferable post-secondary courses
    • Successful completion of Foundations of Math 30 or Pre-Calculus 30 recommended, but not required
    • Minimum average of 70% on five subject high school average. Learn how we calculate your admission average.
    • Proficiency in English
  • Transfer Admission
    • Attempted 18 or more credit units of transferable post-secondary level studies
    • Grade 12 standing, or equivalent
    • Successful completion of Foundations of Math 30 or Pre-Calculus 30 preferred
    • Meet the minimum university transfer entrance average of 60%
    • Transfer credit will not be rewarded for any cohort classes in the program
    • Proficiency in English
  • Mature Admission
    • Entering first year of study (applicants who have completed 18 credits or more of university-level credits are not eligible to apply for mature admission)
    • Applicants must be 21 years of age by the first day of classes
    • A written submission demonstrating capacity to undertake university-level studies
    • Transcripts of any secondary or post-secondary coursework
    • Copies of supporting documents covering any non-credit programs completed
    • Resume
    • Proficiency in English

Note 1: Students completing the program alongside another degree should consult with an advisor in their home college to understand how the courses fit within their program requirements.

Note 2: Students admitted into the Certificate in Business program must complete requirements within a ten (10) year time period. Students returning to the Certificate in Business program after an absence of five (5) or more years may be placed under the curriculum requirements in effect on the date of readmission.

BAC Credit

Students transferring from the BAC program should consult with an undergraduate programs advisor to see how their courses will be used in the new program.

Money Matters

Tuition and Student Fees

One of the most frequent questions asked by students is "how much will the business certificate cost?"

In 2020-21, students will pay $847.50 per 3-credit unit class. For current tuition information, visit the U of S tuition website.

All certificate students must pay on-campus student fees. These fees are subject to review and revision at any time and are non-refundable after the add/drop deadline for a given term.


Textbook expenses vary depending on the requirements of each course. Generally students should expect to budget between $100 and $200 per class for texts and materials.

Transfer to a Degree

For those who may want to pursue a business degree in the future, all eight courses in Certificate in Business program fully transfer to the Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Saskatchewan. To learn more, please contact the Student & Faculty Services Office.
