The George S. Dembroski Student Managed Portfolio Trust (Dembroski SMPT), the investment portfolio run by Edwards School of Business (Edwards) students at the University of Saskatchewan, has placed second at the 2023 Global Assets Management Education Forum in New York City.

11 students along with faculty advisor Dr. Abdullah Mamun (PhD), represented the University of Saskatchewan at the 2023 Global Assets Management Education Forum in April 2023.

Hosted by Quinnipiac University, the GAME Forum is the largest student-run financial conference in the world and brings together over 1,300 students and 140 institutions to discuss and debate financial best practices with world-renowned industry leaders. The Global Portfolio Competition is an experiential learning opportunity where students experience presenting their portfolios and comparing their performance with other individuals, teams and universities.

To enter the GAME Forum portfolio competition, Edwards students submitted data and technical information on the Dembroski SMPT for a performance review in the Undergraduate Value Portfolio category. This year, a total of 23 students contributed to the submission which also included conference preparation and an in-class pitch component voted on by peers. The students and Dr. Mamun then travelled to New York to attend the conference and showcase the Dembroski SMPT in the GAME Poster session.

Although the GAME Forum entry was the first time Edwards has entered the competition, the growth of the portfolio was many years in the making.

The Dembroski SMPT is overseen by a board of trustees that includes investment professionals, finance faculty, alumni and students. Currently valued at over $4.3 million, it has consistently delivered exceptional returns comparable with those of top professional managers. Over the last 10 years, the fund’s return on investment (ROI) has been an impressive 10.94 per cent compounded annually. Equally as impressive are the five-year and three-year returns of 11.85 per cent and 13.37 per cent, respectively.

"This is further demonstration of the value that our students bring to the business profession and the province," said Dean Dr. Keith Willoughby (PhD). "Our students can compete against the best of the best – because they are the best of the best."

The Edwards School of Business extends its thanks to the many guest speakers and volunteers who have given their time and energy over the years to support the Dembroski SMPT.
